Abstract
The natural range and some structural characteristics of Abies hickelii for ests were studied in Pico de Orizaba and Acultzingo in the State of Veracru z, Mexico. Forest structure is described based on a sampling of 21 plots of 0.1 ha each. Current and potential distribution of A, hickelii was determi ned by examination of the complete exicatas in the major herbaria of Mexico . Based on such information, potential distribution of this species was sim ulated by using GEO and ARCHVIEW A. hickelii forests occur in a disjunctive way throughout its range, preferentially into deep ravines along slopes of 47 to 75%; north facing. In Veracruz State, three different associations a re distinguished: a) Pinus patula, A. hickelii, Alnus firmifolia and Quercu s spp. b) A. hickelii, P. pseudostrobus, Salix oxilepis and Arbutus xalapen sis and c) A. hickelii and A. religiosa Importance values indicate that dom inant species are. A. hickelii-Pinus pseudostrobus and A. hickelii-P. ayaca huite. Also, these species have the highest basal area. A. hickelii forest presents five strata: mosses and lichen layer, herb layer, shrubs laver, lo w tree layer and high tree layer. The soils where A. hickelii forests are l ocated are more acid than that of A. religiosa, The more important group of species are: A. hickelii - P. pseudostrobus and A. hickelii - P. ayacahuit e.
