Abstract
The compacting and sintering behavior of nano ZrO2(3Y) powder synthesized b y a new method which called heating of alcohol-aqueous salt solutions were investigated. It was found that the density of the green compact was increa sed with calcining temperature of the powder. The green compact obtained at 450MPa was translucent which means the structure was uniform and the pores were small and narrow distributed. The powder calcined at 450 degreesC had a better sintering behavior than those calcined at lower or higher tempera tures because of its smaller hard agglomerates. A relative density of 98.5% could be obtained when the powder was sintered at 1150 degreesC for 2h. Di fferent with the classic sintering theory which believes that the grain gro ws rapidly during the final sintering stage, it was found that the grain gr ew slowly even when the sintering temperature was 1150-1300 degreesC high a nd the relative density of Y-TZP materials was higher than 98%. This new ph enomenon was explained by the enrichment of Y+ on the grain boundaries whic h hindered the grain growth. (C) 2001 cta Materialia Inc. Published by Else vier Science Ltd.
