Abstract
This article maintains that Eduardo Mendoza's La Ciudad de los prodigios ap proaches the debate on la gran novel.la sobre Barcelona from a new critical perspective, and participates in a much wider and older literary debate on writing the city. Through an analysis of two self-reflexive narrative devi ces, it is suggested that the novel offers the reader a critical examinatio n of the relationship between literary cities and real urban spaces. It is revealed that Mendoza's scepticism about representing the city in fiction u ltimately informs readers that the city the writer creates is an invented s pace and should not always be read as an accurate representation of a real objective referent.
