Abstract
The Mediplanct cruise, in 1972, permitted to realize samples of zooplankton using a technic of horizontal hauls, in the Mediterranean Sea off Malta. T he taxonomic analysis of copepods between 1800 and 3700 meters leaded to th e identification of 62 species. In contrast to results expected at such dep th, few typically bathypelagic species were identified. They seem to be rep laced by species with a large vertical distribution, which could explain th e presence of more shallow living species. The faunistic composition may co nstitute the main characteristic of the eastern Mediterranean deep fauna, a nd can be explained by the physico-chemical properties of this sea as well as the historical formation of Mediterranean waters. These samples are also characterized by three species recorded for the first time in the Mediterr anean Sea: Aetideus acutus Farran, 1929; Spinocalanus terranovae Damkaer, 1 975; Euchaeta paraacuta Tanaka, 1973.
