The sprouting and rotting of potato during post harvest storage results int
o tremendous losses. In the present study several naturally occurring volat
ile essential oils and monoterpenoids were tested as sprout suppressant on
potatoes of Cv. 'Kufri Ashoka' stored under ambient conditions (20-38 degre
esC, 30-80 % RH) from March to May. Invidividual essential oils of spearmin
t, peppermint, caraway and dill seed and in mixture peppermint-linalool wer
e found to be most effective sprouting inhibitor, whereas, all the treatmen
ts showed no significant differences In rotting behaviour as compared to co
ntrol, except oils of caraway and dill seed.
