Abstract
The long-term oxidative degradation for high density polyethylene (HDPE) ir radiated with various ion-beams was studied. Such degradation was insignifi cant for low density polyethylene (LDPE) even if irradiation was carried ou t under the same condition as for HDPE. This is attributed to a hydroperoxi de group as the initiator produced by the reaction of the allyl radical wit h oxygen. The relationship between the mechanical properties and the local transforma tion induced by ion-beam irradiation was investigated. It is seen that the depth profiles of the mechanical properties along the pathway of the inject ed ion correspond to that of the crosslinking induced in polyethylene. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
