Abstract
The possibility that gluonic excitations of hadronic matter or of the QCD v acuum may exist is perhaps one of the most fascinating topics in hadron spe ctroscopy. Glueballs are predicted by many models; in particular present-da y lattice gauge calculations require their existence. All these models agre e that the lightest glueball should have scalar quantum numbers and a mass around 1.6 GeV, which corresponds to the mass region where the scalar q (q) over bar -mesons are expected. So mixing effects can complicate the search for the glueball. Experiments show indeed an overpopulation of states for which many very different interpretations exist. This reflects the complexi ty of this question. New data from various experiments on scalar states giv e hints to the question how the scalar states should be interpreted. But st ill many questions remain unexplained.
