Abstract
The space-time variability of physicochemical parameters eras studied in th e superficial waters of the lower basin and plume of the Manzanares river; Sucre State, Venezuela, in the period between July 1996 and June 1997. Temp erature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, nitrates, phosphates, si licates and material in suspension were determined in twenty-two (22) stati ons in the low basin and feather of the river. The temperature of superfici al waters presented a seasonal behavior closely related to the climatic con ditions that prevail in the rain and drought periods, and the T-S diagrams suggest the mixing of two water bodies (river and sea) with different physi co-chemical properties. During the dry season heterotrophic processes domin ate in the river and mixture area, causing a decrease of pH and dissolved o xygen, which were affected by dredging being carried out in the area. The m aterial in suspension increased in the rainy months (July to November), rea ching the maximum value (1075 mg/l) in September Ammonium concentrations we re higher during the dry season as a consequence of oxidation of organic ma tter transported in the river: due to more prolonged residence of the water s. Nitrates, phosphates and silicates are linearly related with material in suspension (r > 0.60), with the highest values during the rainy season.
