In benthic intertidal Studies it is common to standardize species density,
and other variables, to a square metre, regardless of the surface area samp
led. Using a fully-nested sampling design, with sampling unit surface areas
ranging front 0.020 to l m(2), the present study investigated the effect o
f this procedure oil the accuracy of the results. It is demonstrated that t
his standardization has a profound influence oil the resultant estimates, i
ntroducing a substantial error into inter-study comparisons.
