Abstract
Among many nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, Sr2Be2B2O7 (SBBO) and structur ally related crystals is promising for the generation of UV and vacuum-UV ( VUV) light. However, high viscosity, volatility and the platy growth habit have limited the growth of thick crystals for actual NLO applications. The growth of these crystals to a significant thickness has perplexed researche rs in the past decade. The K2Al1B2O7 (KAB) is a new NLO borate crystal disc overed in our laboratory. KAB possesses a layered structure similar to SBBO and thus is another potential UV NLO crystals. We adopted a modified middl e-seeded solution growth (MSSG) method to grow KAB crystals. We were able t o grow high-quality, bulk KAB crystal with dimensions of 12 x 10 x 6.5 t mm (3). As our knowledge, among NLO borate crystals that have similar structur e like the SBBO crystal, KAB is the first one that can be grown to such dim ension to meet the requirement for proper measurement of linear and nonline ar optical properties.
