The first neutrino observations with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are p
resented. Based on preliminary analyses, the location, direction, and energ
y of the observed events are consistent with detection of B-8 solar neutrin
os by charged current absorption on deuterium and elastic scattering off el
ectrons, with little background. Water assays indicate radioactivity levels
are falling and are within a small factor of the level necessary for measu
rement of the flux of all active neutrino flavors via the neutral current r
eaction on deuterium.
