Abstract
Digital X-ray detectors of several types have been introduced to the indust rial X-ray market in recent years. Many radiographic facilities have wonder ed if this is the time to begin to seriously move from film to digital dete ctors. Many issues are involved in those decisions including cost, performa nce, suitability to the environment and code acceptability. The question of what is the best defector to use cannot be answered until the requirements and the environment of the examination are stipulated. This paper presents the results of a review of several types of new digital X-ray detectors ap plied to the radiographic examination of F-15 aircraft by the US Air Force. The conclusions drawn at the end of the paper may not be appropriate for a different application, energy range or environment. Even so, a good overvi ew of the strengths and weaknesses of the various digital defector technolo gies can be grasped from this paper and these may provide a good basis for beginning the process of selecting a detector for other specific tasks and environments.
