Abstract
Absorption across intestinal mucosal membranes is recognized as a rate-limi ting step for systemic delivery of therapeutic agents following oral admini stration. Our understanding of the factors that limit transport across muco sal membranes has developed in part from in vitro methodologies. Such under standings are being further expanded with advances made in pharmacogenomics . Cloning and expression of drug transporters provide tools to drug discove ry scientists for optimizing candidate selection. Our increased awareness o f these physiological factors should provide the impetus for more efficient candidate selection and physiology-based dosage form design in the future.
