Abstract
The effects of Hata-keshimeji (Lyophyllum decastes Sing.) on serum and hepa tic lipid levels were investigated in rats. The fruit body was added at a l evel of 10% to a diet containing 0.5% cholesterol. Each fraction of hot-wat er-extract (HWE), crude polysaccharide (CP), and ethanol extract (EE) was a dded at a level that corresponds to 10% fruit body (7.5, 0.5, and 1%, respe ctively). Total serum cholesterol in the rats fed the fruit body and HWE wa s shown to be significantly lower. Levels of hepatic cholesterol in the rat s fed the fruit body, HWE, CP or EE also showed significantly lower. Furthe rmore, feeding of the fruit body of Hatakeshimeji significantly increased t he fecal excretion of bile acids. These results suggest that Hatakeshimeji may be a functional food for preventing hypocholesterolemia.
