The transverse momenta (p(x) ,p(y)) of projectile fragments produced by 1.0
A GeV Au-197 nuclei incident on Au and C targets have been measured. The me
dium and heavy fragments have p(x) and p(y) distributions, which are wider
than predicted by models. For the Au target the widths of the distributions
are significantly larger than those for C, particularly for the heavy frag
ments. The C distributions show a different gross structure, which may be d
ue to the target-projectile size difference.
