Abstract
This study reports the distribution of the alpha 1D and alpha 1E calcium ch annel subunits in the neotenous tiger salamander retina based on immunohist ochemical techniques. Confocal and light microscopy were used to localize s taining with fluorescently tagged antibodies to alpha 1D and alpha 1E in cr oss-sectional and flatmount preparations of retina, al D-immunoreactivity ( alpha 1D-IR) was localized to the inner and outer plexiform layers (IPL and OPL, respectively), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and optic fiber layer. alph a 1E-IR was found predominantly in the IPL, with scattered, weak representa tion in the OPL. alpha 1E-IR was not detected in the GCL or fiber layer. Th ese findings suggest that different al calcium channel proteins have distin ctive distributions in retina, which may reflect their unique and different roles in retinal processing and homeostasis.
