Abstract
The results from the measurement of the fluorescence spectra of fluoroquino lone antibiotics including ofloxacin (OF), norfloxacin (NOR) and ciprofloxa cin (CIP) complexed with cobalt (II) and ATP give information concerning th e antibiotics-nucleotide interactions. From the fluorescence spectral data, it appears that the fluoroquinolone antibiotic cannot directly complex wit h ATP but indirectly complex with cobalt (II), which is playing an intermed iary role. The interaction of fluoroquinolone antibiotic with the nucleotid e occurs mainly through the phosphate group. The conclusion offers a more c omplete mechanism, which is important for understanding the interaction of these drugs with DNA. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
