Abstract
In order to determine the relative importance of the role played by inelast ic excitations and transfer channels of the colliding nuclei, in near-barri er fusion enhancement, the fusion cross sections have;been measured for C-1 2+ Pt-194,Pt-198 in the energy range of 0.9 less than or equal toE/V-B less than or equal to1.2. Additional data bf quasielastic and nucleon(s)-exchan ge cross sections have also been measured at an energy of 1.2V(B). The stre ngth of transfer form factors required for the simplified coupled-channels calculations has been obtained from the transfer reaction measurements usin g a semiclassical approach and calculations based on complex WKB approximat ions. Coupled-reaction-channels calculations have been performed to explain the complete data set that included fusion, quasielastic, and transfer cro ss sections. The dominant contributions to the enhancement of fusion cross section compared to a one-dimensional barrier-penetration model arise from coupling to inelastic channels. It has been shown for the first time that t he lighter isotope (Pt-194) Of a given nuclide that has a relatively larger collectivity (beta (lambda)) and a larger neutron separation energy compar ed to the heavier isotope (Pt-198), exhibits larger enhancement of fusion c ross section. The experimental fusion-barrier distributions were obtained f rom fusion and quasielastic scattering data.
