Abstract
LiMn2O4 and LiAl0.1Mn1.9O4 were synthesized using LiOH, Al(NO3)(3), and Mn3 O4 by the melt-impregnation method. LiAl0.1Mn1.9O4 showed an excellent cycl ing performance in the 4 V region, but it produced an abrupt capacity loss compared to that of LiMn2O4 spinel in the 3 V region. From the ex situ X-ra y diffraction measurements, we observed that the intensities of (311) and ( 400) peaks for LiAl0.1Mn1.9O4, which are typical peaks of cubic phase, grad ually increased with cycling and indicated the formation of mixed structure of distinct cubic and tetragonal phases after the third cycle. The increas e of cubic phase in the LiAl0.1Mn1.9O4 structure prevented complete structu ral change from cubic (Li1.0Mn2O4) to tetragonal (Li2Mn2O4) in the 3 V regi on. This phenomenon might be one of the major origins of a severe capacity loss for LiAl0.1Mn1.9O4 material in the 3 V region. (C) 2001 The Electroche mical Society.
