Abstract
A new method of joining metal sheets using a short pipe rivet is proposed. A pipe rivet is set between two sheets and compressive force is applied, th en both ends of the pipe are impressed into the sheets, respectively. and j oining is made. Here, tile inner, corners of both ends of the pipe rivet ar e cut off conically; so that the diameter elf ends may be enlarged during i mpression and a tie,ht joining is obtained. Consequently it was found that joining strength against in-plane and out-of-plane forces is quite high. Fu rthermore, a modified method by using a wavy ribbon rivet is proposed and i t was found that this method call be applied to the joining of a long joini ng line successfully.
