Abstract
The conductance in breaking nanocontacts has been measured at room temperat ure for relay contacts of Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru and Ir. None of them showed well-d efined quantized conductance peaks in their conductance histograms, but som e metals exhibited short plateaus in conductance traces and broad peaks in conductance histograms. We found a general tendency that harder metals have lesser degree of conductance quantization, i.e., lesser chance of observin g conductance plateaus and peaks. This correlation ist however, weak and ca n be explained by considering the deformation of nanocontacts as that of de fect-free ideal crystals. No sign of quantized conductance were observed in Pd contacts.
