Abstract
A method for evaluating digital radio transmission performance in multipath propagation is proposed, and two typical environments are evaluated. The m ultipath environments examined have radio waves with both longer and shorte r arrival-delay differentials than the symbol duration. The effects of radi o waves on symbol detection are expressed by an amplitude distribution whic h is efficiently obtained using a characteristic function method. Results s how that degradation was the source of the intersymbol interference in clos ed-space environments, and an increase in the symbol rate degrades transmis sion performance. By comparison in open-space line-of-site urban environmen ts, site-specific multipath interference decreases the symbol detection mar gin, and a sharp degradation in transmission performance occurs.
