Abstract
The luminescence spectrum of KCl co-doped with divalent and trivalent europ ium ions was measured as a function of temperature in order to characterize novel spectral holes that appear in the blue emission from Eu2+. The radia tive energy transfer from Eu2+ to Eu3+ produces the spectral holes and indu ces the luminescence from Eu3+ responsible for the D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions. The holes and the induced luminescence are stron gly associated with the thermal band broadening of the blue emission. In ad dition, the observed line splitting of the induced luminescence of Eu3+ is also discussed in terms of a crystal-field Hamiltonian.
