Abstract
The location of low-lying states in the very neutron-rich isotope Mg-34 has been determined for the first time. In-beam gamma -ray spectroscopy was pe rformed using a two-step fragmentation reaction. Two strong gamma -lines we re observed at 660(10) keV and 1460(20) keV, which are tentatively attribut ed to the 2(1)(+) --> 0(g.s)(+) and 4(1)(+) --> 2(1)(+) transitions in Mg-3 4, respectively. These tentative assignments lead to a very low energy for the 2(1)(+) state and a large E (4(1)(+))/E(2(1)(+)) ratio of about 3.2, in agreement with the expectations for a well deformed isotope.
