The oxidation of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMP) over Sn2+ on ion exch
ange resin is carried out in a batch reactor. The influence of the reactant
concentrations, reaction temperature and catalyst amount is investigated.
Within the temperature range studied, 303-323 K, the reaction follows the s
econd order kinetic equation -r(TEMP) = kC(TEMP)C(H2O2), With reaction rate
constant k = 2.2 x 10(7)exp (-51200/RT) L/mol h. We propose a reaction mec
hanism different from that for catalyzation by tungstate. The catalyst like
ly forms complexes with hydroxyl radicals, keeping their concentration stea
dy. At the same time, the catalyst also decreases the decomposition of hydr
ogen peroxide caused by high temperatures and the reactant 2,2,6,6-tetramet
hylpiperidine itself.
