Abstract
In order to understand the Aurignacian phenomenon in fur-ope, one must clar ify definitions and then consider it both in its territorial entirety and w ithin the complexity of its origins. Moreover, the Aurignacian appears to b e a composite phenomenon, articulated in a series of phases with varying ge ographic limits. The "classic" sequence defined in Western Europe is from n ow on insufficient to support an intelligible model. We propose here to exp lain explain essential characteristics useful for this new idea.
