Abstract
Anhydrous potassium pelargonate (KC9) undergoes four thermal transitions fr om room temperature to 450 degreesC. A normal mode analysis was made for th e molecule in phase I at room temperature and the molecule was considered t o have an all-trans conformation. With increasing temperature, partial melt ing of the alkyl chains occurred in phase II and complete melting was obser ved in phase III, as confirmed by vibrational spectra. In addition, orienta tional disorder of the carboxylate groups was suggested in phase II. This t ransition behavior of potassium pelargonate was compared with the behavior of nonane and pelargonic acid. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re served.
