Abstract
Applicants to psychiatry residencies often express a preference for balance between psychotherapy/psychology and biological approaches. If is not clea r, however, that parity is an achievable or even desirable goal. The degree to which balance may be achieved is influenced by the phase of training, r esident preferences, scientific advances, and the healthcare system. Ail ov eremphasis on maintenance of balance may be unduly restrictive.
