Abstract
There is a difference between the quality of medical care generally availab le in the gynecological-oncological field and the reality experienced by wo men patients in Germany. Several reasons lead to that situation. The equipm ent available in hospitals and practices is not all of a consistently high, state of the art standard. The quality of care also depends on the depth o f a multiprofessional approach to gynecological-oncological illnesses; a sa tisfactory depth of approach is not widespread in the German healthcare sys tem. The patient's access to optimal care often depends on chance, and she has too little opportunity to decide together with her doctors about the co urse of her therapy. The quality of medical care is not transparent, open,a nd subject to appraisal - least of all to the woman herself. Many patients complain of the lack of empathic information about medical an d practical facts concerning their illness. They often do not get enough ps ychological and social support - which is very important, especially for pa tients suffering from cancer. There is not enough co-operation between the institutions of medical care and those responsible for the psychological ca re of the patient. One of the main health insurance companies in Germany, AOK Rhineland, is tr ying to change these structures in order to focus more on the needs of the patient and improve the quality of medical care in the gynecological-oncolo gical field.
