Abstract
The propagation of fatigue cracks in specimens subjected to variable amplit ude loading under plane strain conditions was investigated experimentally a nd numerically, to find the influence of the variable amplitude loading on the stabilised crack closure level. Experiments on four-point-bend specimen s with a Gurney block load scheme, showed that the crack closure level depe nds on the crack length but not on the stress range of the fluctuations. Nu merical simulations performed in the fatigue crack growth program FASTRAN-I I showed good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, statist ical uncertainty analyses performed on the fatigue life show that, for tech nical applications, the uncertainties in initial crack length and load leve ls have a greater influence on the uncertainty in fatigue life, than the fl uctuation level of the load.
