Abstract
This article endeavours to show in the given examples that the ECSC steel R TD programme has contributed largely to innovation in the Community steel i ndustry, but also stimulated innovation activities throughout all its resea rch areas. The Programme has produced significant synergies, first of all b y widely diffusing non-competitive knowledge throughout the Community leadi ng to economic benefits, to the protection of the environment, and to bette r working conditions. In cases where projects were unsuccessful or found on ly limited application, the diffusion of the RTD results throughout the Com munity avoided duplication of RTD efforts and the move efficient use of res ources.
