Abstract
Shell model calculations based on active proton configurations are performe d for the nuclei Sm-144(62)82 and Eu-145(63)82 using a Surface Delta plus a modified quadrupole-quadrupole and octupole-octupole interaction, The ener gies of the excited states up to J = 16 and J = 29/2, respectively, are obt ained in good agreement with the experimental values. Special attention is paid to the description of those excited states which are interpreted in th e phonon-phonon or in the particle-core coupling model as (2(+) x 3(-))(J-) , (2(+) x 1h(11/2))(J-), and (3(-) x 1h(11/2))(J+) configurations, where th e 2(+) and the 3(-) state are the low lying collective states of Sm-144.
