Abstract
A promising method for drilling of hard rocks has been tested using a high- stored-energy (up to 60 kJ) pulsed power generator. The pulsed power method of drilling is based on the difference in dynamic breakdown field strength of liquid and solid dielectrics. When short high-voltage pulses are applie d to a solid-liquid interface, a breakdown occurs in the solid dielectric ( rock) rather than in the insulating liquid (usually water). The measurement s with constant pulse energy and different output voltages show the existen ce of an optimum voltage. The maximum values reached in the experiments are -183 cm(3) per pulse for pulse effectiveness and -180 J/cm(3) for energy e ffectiveness. Both numbers are for large granite blocks.
