Abstract
Excited states have been identified in the very neutron-deficient Ba-119 nu cleus. Two bands have been observed, which are likely to be based on h(11/2 ) and (g(7/2)d(5/2)) neutron orbitals. Despite this being the first observa tion of excited states in Ba-119, the bands extend to (75/2)(h) over bar an d (79/2)(h) over bar, respectively. The bands have been assigned to Ba-119 using gamma-recoil and gamma-x-ray coincidences. Several quasiparticle alig nments have been identified. involving neutron (h(11/2))(2) and proton (h(1 1/2))(2) aligned configurations. Furthermore, the bands show features which are reasonably consistent with smooth band termination at high spin. Theor etical results for Ba-119 are discussed within the framework of cranked Woo ds-Saxon and Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.
