Abstract
The quasicontinuous spectra associated with the decay of the superdeformed bands in Pb-192,Pb-194 have been extracted. The rapid rise in the gamma-ray intensity in these spectra for E gamma less than or similar to 1.8 MeV is interpreted to arise from the dramatic increase in level density above the energy gap for even-even nuclei. This energy gap has been found to be appro ximate to 0.95(10) MeV at 6 (h) over bar in Pb-194 and approximate to 0.41( -0.1)(+0.4) MeV at 10 (h) over bar in Pb-192.
