At SCA Hygiene Products' tissue mill in Lilla Edet, Sweden, an automatic gu
ided vehicle system (AGVS) permits controlled movements of tissue rolls fro
m the paper machines to the storage and converting lines. At the exit end o
f the paper machine, a discharge device cradles the rolls in wide, smooth f
ingers, which are mirrored by closely fitting fingers used by the AGV for c
arrying the rolls.
To optimize the close fit, the AGV does not drive head first into a transfe
r position; it travels sideways, or laterally, into this docking station. T
his maneuver, coupled with the wide fingers on the vehicle and the load tra
nsfer stands, is the heart of the system.
This paper illustrates the unique maneuvering and transferring characterist
ics of the AGV system.
