Abstract
Although the Oriental tale represents one of the major achievements of high eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century prose in Russia, playing a key function as a vehicle of Enlightened ideals, little research has been conducted on the genre, and in particular on its early nineteenth-century v ersion. Through the investigation of the work of its main representative, A lexander Benitskii, and his tale Na drugoi den', this article examines the late stages of the development of the vostochnaia povest' in Russia. The sh ort-term revival of this genre is set in the historical and literary enviro nment of the first decade of the reign of Alexander I.
