Analysis of the text 'Democratie' from Rimbaud's collection of poems Illumi
nations. From prior assumptions that the poem 'Democratie' had to be read w
ithin a particular socio-political context, this analysis casts new light o
n its parodic intention. The main target of the parody is the discourse hel
d by Thiers and the 'Thierroristes' at the beginning of the Third Republic.
This analysis of some of the possible intertextual sources of 'Democratie'
is based on historical documents and includes two illustrations that can b
e directly linked with the poem.
