Abstract
In recent years, the process of cellular manufacturing (CM) has received mu ch attention and popularity in many developed countries. CM can significant ly reduce the work-in-progress (WIP), the material flow-time and the set-up times. This process enhances the ability to accommodate small batch produc tion and assists manufacturers in reacting to the changing environment in a n effective and efficient manner. As a result of the WIP reduction, the jus t-in-time (JIT) approach is utilized. This paper reviews the development of CM and highlights some important factors that should be considered careful ly when planning a CM process. Areas that warrant further investigation are also discussed. Furthermore, some distinctive points in relation to the es tablishment of CM in Mainland China are considered, as manufacturers are in creasingly interested in taking advantage of Mainland China's open-door pol icy.
