Abstract
The Altyn fault is the major fault on the north-western border of the Qingh ai-Xizang plateau. The results given by a teleseismic P-wave tomography stu dy reveal the Altyn fault a 40km wide low velocity stripe which extends qui te vertically down to a depth of about 150km. The results also show that th e Altyn fault cuts through a Tarim-like lithosphere which already plunged d own to the Qaidam basin, which may imply that the Tarim lithosphere once su bducted beneath the Qaidam before Altyn fault came into existence. The resu lts suggest that the hot upper mantle material may have involved in maintai ning the high surface elevation besides the simple gravity compensation in the central-northern Qinghai-Xizang plateau.
