Abstract
With the aim of generating synthetic daily precipitation records at ungauge d locations, several methods have been proposed to describe rainfall fields on a regional scale. Until the present time, these methods have only consi dered the influence of geographic variables. We propose also taking into ac count climatic variables which may be easily identified and measured at any point. Due to the characteristic shape of the Guadalquivir valley which op ens towards the Atlantic Ocean, the geographic variable considered here is the distance to the sea rather than the distance between meteorological sta tions. Mean annual precipitation and mean number of wet days are the climat ic variables taken into account. The procedure we have followed involves es timating the parameters of the stochastic Markov chain-mixed exponential mo del. The method of estimation consists of weighting the values of the varia bles taking into account their proximity to the ungauged points. Once the c oefficients have been estimated, ten precipitation series of 40 years in le ngth have been simulated at each of the two test stations. Results show tha t the model reproduces the observed data with great accuracy. However, new results must be obtained at other points. New interpolation variables such as elevation also need to be incorporated into the model. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
