Abstract
Growth of Fe1-xMnx alloys on GaAs (0 0 1) were carried out by molecular bea m epitaxy and both alpha-Fe1-xMnx (BCC) and gamma-Fe1-xMnx (FCC) phases hav e been achieved. Single-crystalline x-Fe1-xMnx thin-film is stabilized with Mn concentration up to 20%, while single-crystalline gamma-Fe1-xMnx phase is succeeded with Mn concentration higher than 65%. The structure of Fe1-xM nx alloys is found to be more complicated for Mn concentration 20% < x < 65 %. From the magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement, it is obtained that th e Fe1-xMnx alloys are ferromagnetic at Mn concentration x < 40% but antifer romagnetic otherwise. To further understand the magnetism of Fe1-xMnx alloy s, an ab initio all-electron linearized augmented-plane-wave calculation, u sing the local-spin-density approximation, has been carried out and a good agreement reached with the experiment.
