Abstract
Background: A technique of remote ischemic preconditioning was evaluated in a rat model in order to increase the ischemic tolerance of the liver durin g resection and transplantation. Methods: The impact of a short standardized ischemia of the right lower lim b on liver microcirculation after warm ischemia was studied by intravital f lourescence microscopy. Results: Improved microcirculation, reduced leukocyte-endothelial-interacti on and decreased liver-enzyme-liberation were detected resulting in a reduc tion of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Conclusion: If this effect was reproducible in other transplantable organs the remote ischemic preconditioning could easily be applied before multi or gan harvesting.
