Abstract
The symmetries of rotation-vibration states of the diatomic molecules N2 and O2 are described by means of the chain of subgroups U(4) supers et-of U(3) superset-of O(3). The transition-matrix elements of rotatio nal Raman scattering are calculated by means of the group-theory appro ach. The cross sections of rotational Raman scattering are given for N 2 and O2. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experi mental values.
