Abstract
The determination of the initial configuration is essential in simulat ing the formation process of en echelon faults in order to estimate st rong motion due to them. It is observed in Riedel shear model experime nts using periodic shear bands that the bifurcation plays a key role w hen these faults are initiated. Therefore, this paper develops a analy sis method of identifying the configuration that is most likely to be realized among those which can be initiated. The realizable configurat ion is determined as the one that minimizes the strain energy among al l possible configuration. The proposed method uses a functional which provides the total strain energy of the body, and the configuration is computed by using suitable approximate solutions of the functional. N umerical computation shows that the predicted configuration is in good agreement with the observed one for both en echelon faults and Riedel shears. Furthermore, it is shown that the configuration depends littl e on material properties, as the shape of periodic shear bands in vari ous materials is similar. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
