Abstract
The method of Muschietti and Dum [Muschietti, L., Dum, C.T., 1993. Rea l group velocity in a medium with dissipation. Phys. Fluids B 5 (5) 13 83-1397] is applied to the dispersion relation for ice-coupled wave pr opagation in continuous, inelastic sea ice, with the goal of examining how the group velocity U is affected by absorption in the material. U sing a Gaussian wave packet centred on realistic ocean wavelengths, it is found that U can be altered significantly over moderate distances for short period waves even for homogeneous ice, but that at swell per iods the effect is negligible unless the distances considered are larg e. The results relate to studies where the spatial variation of energy flux is tracked through the material as, particularly at short period s, they suggest that U should not be treated as constant.
