Abstract
The Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme (SM&T) of the Europe an Commission (continuation of the BCR and Measurements and Testing Pr ogrammes) aims to contribute to the harmonization and improvement of m ethods and measurements carried out within the European Union and henc e to the comparability of data necessary for e.g. trade activities, mo nitoring of environment, food and health, etc. One of the tool current ly used to achieve this goal is the organization of interlaboratory st udies (intercomparisons and certifications of reference materials) in which laboratories may collaborate to improve the measurement or analy sis concerned. Other activities are related to development of new meth ods and prenormative research. Examples of projects undertaken within the Measurements and Testing Programme (1990-94) are given in this pap er, covering different aspects, namely interlaboratory study on modern pesticides in freeze dried water, certification of Cr-species in wate r and welding dust, evaluation of extraction and derivatization proced ures in organotin speciation analysis, network on harmonization of lea ding/extraction tests for environmental risk assessment, and proficien cy testing scheme applied to marine monitoring (QUASIMEME project).
