Abstract
Often in methodical analysis acquiescence has been conceptualized as a response sec and a generalized tendency to be agreeable but has been operationally defined as a response style in terms of a disproportiona l tendency to select a certain response category Using questions of sa tisfaction and attitude of the German Socio Economic Panel (GSOEP) it is shown chat both forms of response bias have different reasons and t hat they have to be interpreted in a differentiated manner. In this st udy the response sets are mostly independent of the data collection me thods. They rather depend on the tendency of poorly educated people to be uncritical of sweeping statements. The identified response styles on the other hand are mainly the result of a quickly held face-to-face interview. In addition to the identification and explanation of both forms of bias there is also a discussion of possible effects on empiri cal analysis.
