The study of the polarization direction correlation method (PDCO) for gamma
quanta emitted from the nuclear states oriented in fusion-evaporation reac
tions is discussed with emphasis on making unique multipolarity assignments
. The method is applied to the data coming from a typical experiment perfor
med with the EUROGAM II array, where polarization-sensitive CLOVER detector
s were used. The accuracy obtained in the experiment for the studied transi
tions was high enough to exclude, using the PDCO method, most of the ambigu
ities which occur if the assignments are made on the basis of angular corre
