The deuteron elastic structure function A(Q(2)) has been extracted in the r
ange 0.7 less than or equal to Q(2) less than or equal to 6.0 (GeV/c)(2) fr
om cross section measurements of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in co
incidence using the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The data are c
ompared to theoretical models, based on the impulse approximation with the
inclusion of meson-exchange currents, and to predictions of quark dimension
al scaling and perturbative quantum chromodynamics. [S0031-9007(99)08477-X]
